Russia’s Olympic team will not participate in next year’s Winter Games that will take place in South Korea. This comes as a punishment to Russia for doping in the previous events. According to the ruling by the International Olympics Committee (I.O.C), willing athletes from Russia will compete individually in neutral uniforms.
A panel will be created by I.O.C to check the eligibility of those willing to compete. Unlike in the previous case when athletes competing independently were referred to as Independent Olympic Athletes, if any one from participates, he/she will be referred to as Olympic Athlete from Russia.
Some of the sports most likely to be affected by this ban include cross-country skiing and biathlon where Russia has previously performed very well. The event will kick off on February 9 and close on February 25.
