The long awaited battle in the newly created municipality of Bugiri has finally come to an end after the returning officer announced Counsel Asuman Basalirwa leader of the JEEMA Party as the overall winner of the elections at around half past midnight amidst cheers from his supporters. He beat four other candidates to the victory that included NRM’s Oketcho who put up a spirited fight in the second place, FDC’s Namatende, and Independents Wamono and Lyavala.
However, this election wasn’t only seen as between the candidates but it was also between President Yoweri Museveni, Dr. Kizza Besigye and Robert Kyagulanyi (Bobi Wine) who backed Oketcho, Namatende and Basalirwa respectively. Each camp was promising victory to its supporters even though at the end of the day, Kyagulanyi and Basalirwa emerged the winners of the night.
Basalirwa’s start wasn’t that good as part of the electorate accused him of spending most of his time at Kampala than in Bugiri. This gave FDC’s Namatende an upper hand as they said she was always on ground. However as time went on, he managed to explain his reasons why he is not a common figure in Bugiri and managed to win people’s hearts. Lyavala’s pullout from the race and joining Basalirwa’s camp was one of the last minute determining factor.
The elections were part of the seven newly created municipalities that were filling in their vacancies where NRM was the biggest winner.
