20th December 2017 will forever remain in the hearts of Ugandans. They will always remember it as day of sadness and others a day of happiness. Yesterday marked a big step in the amendment of article 102(b) and it could be the last nail in the coffin. Whether the honourables represented their people’s views or their own, that now remains a different story.
Out of the 416 members that voted, 317 members voted in favour of removing the age limit (out of the 289 that was required), 97 (including 28 ruling party members) opposed the move while 2 abstained. Some of the great shockers of the day included NRM’s Henry Kibalya , Susan Ameru, and Johnson Muyanja who voted no while FDC’s Beatrice Anywar and Betty Among voted yes.
It should be remembered that opposition missed some of its suspended members like Allan Sewanyana, Medard Lubega Sseggona, Mubaraka Munyagwa, Ibrahim Ssemuju Nganda, who were earlier this week suspended from the chambers. The members through their lawyer Erias Lukwago tried to deliver a court summon to the speaker concerning their suspension even though they were never allowed later on arrested and taken to Police.
